Baptisms at St. Martin In the Fields
Overview
Baptism is the Christian rite of initiation, a Sacrament where by individuals become joined to the Body of Christ. It originally contained three parts: a pouring of water over the candidate in the name of the Father and Son and the Holy Spirit, a laying on of hands with special prayers along with a sealing with Holy Oil, and participation in the Holy Eucharist with the reception of Holy Communion. Over time, these parts were broken away into the separate rites of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion.
The Church is now in the process of trying to deal with these separate parts while maintaining the integrity of the original rite of initiation. Unfortunately, there are different opinions as to how, or even if, we should fit the pieces back together. In addition, many local and family customs have become associated with the events of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion. This means that much confusion arises from the different approaches among various denominations and even, at times, within denominations.
Philosophy
At St. Martin's, we try to blend liturgical and theological scholarship with a pastoral approach. This is best accomplished through discussion of the topics involved. Therefore, the Rector meets with the baptismal candidate and/or parents to talk about the nature of the service.
Structure
The most ideal time for baptism is at the Great Vigil of Easter, since that was the practice of the early Church. Easter Day is the second best choice, followed by Pentecost. The feasts of All Saints, and the Baptism of our Lord are also appropriate days for Baptisms. The next best approach, other than these special days, is any Sunday morning during the regular worship service. Baptisms are not usually performed during the season of Lent unless some special situation makes it necessary.
This Rector does not normally perform private baptisms except in response to very special needs and circumstance.
Canonical Requirements
The candidate for baptism must have at least one sponsor (Godparents) who is a practicing Christian over the age of 18. Additional sponsors (Godparents) may be included at the parent's discretion. Sponsors need not be Episcopalians but should actively participate in their church and have a serious commitment to their own spiritual journey.
Parents must meet with the priest for instruction in the meaning of Baptism, in their duties to help the new Christian grow in the knowledge and love of God, and in their responsibilites as members of Christ's Church. Sponsors and Grandparents are welcome to join in their meeting.

Additional Information:
No special clothing is required although many families sometimes choose to use traditional "christening gowns" or other white clothing.
No fee is ever charged for administering any of the Church's Sacraments. There are, however, costs to the church when a baptism occurs. Therefore, when those seeking baptism are not members of the congregation, they are asked to make a contribution to help defray costs.
It is also customary to make a donation in thanksgiving for new life in Christ. Such gifts are purely voluntary and their amounts are determined by those seeking baptism.
